Associate Director – Head of Jazz/Pop/AEMA (1 fte)


The Conservatorium van Amsterdam (CvA) educates musicians to the highest level for the national and international profession. To this end, it offers Bachelor and Master degrees in Classical Music, Jazz and Pop Music, the Dutch National Opera Academy, Music in Education, an Associate degree in Electronic Music and the National Course for Young Top  Talent. This comprehensive offering means that the CvA not only fully reflects the current musical landscape, but also plays an active part in shaping the international music life, both now and in the future. The CvA is the epitome of an international institution. The Classical and Jazz departments are among the largest in Europe, if not the world. The CvA has a highly motivated, top-quality teaching staff, involved support staff and a population of around thirteen hundred students. It forms part of the Amsterdam University of the Arts.


Job description

The Associate Director, Head of Jazz/Pop/AEMA is a member of the executive board, along with the Director and the Associate Director/Head of the Classical department and directs the departments Jazz, Pop, Amsterdam Electronic Music Academy (AEMA), Composing for Film and the Junior Jazz College. There are a total of around 500 students and around 150 staff members. You will be responsible for the development, content and implementation of the courses in these departments, taking note of and anticipating developments in the field. For this, you will inspire and encourage the professionals who provide the education and support and manage them. You will implement the artistic vision for the departments, continue to develop these and be responsible for the commercial operation and quality control within these departments. The Associate Director – Head of Jazz/Pop/AMEA is jointly responsible for the overall policy pursued at the CvA. You will report to the Director, who holds the ultimate responsibility for these matters.


Your profile

You will be able to lead departments of this size and complexity, based on demonstrable experience, and play a part in national and international musical life, specifically in regard to higher vocational music education. You will have demonstrable experience in, and a thorough knowledge of, the Jazz and Pop sector. You will have your own network in the national and international music industry.


You will have an overview of developments in musical education in general and those relating to jazz and pop music in particular. You will embrace the vision of the CvA and contribute towards shaping that vision. You will also be capable of translating that vision into actual plans for the courses, and carry course leaders, teachers and staff workers along with you.


You must be a strategic thinker and an inspiring manager. You can properly distinguish key matters from subsidiary ones and you will be able to inspire, stimulate and coach teachers and staff workers. By doing so, you will create a climate that facilitates optimum development for students, teachers and staff. You will give scope to others and be an outstanding delegator. You must be effective, a strong communicator and be able to strike the correct tone in a range of diverse situations, convincingly advocating a well-considered position. You must have a well-developed sense of perspective and a sense of humour.


You have an excellent command of the English language and the Dutch language, or are willing to quickly master the latter.

Terms of Employment

The job is allocated to job scale 14. Salary is a maximum of EUR 6,813 gross (per month) for a full-time appointment. The appointment and remuneration will be in accordance with the HBO Collective Bargaining Agreement. An excellent package of secondary terms of employment is provided.
